How is SCNZ funded?
We are funded mostly by gifts. Individuals, churches as well as other organisations support our work. We also get some money from training and membership fees. However, these are often paid for by the chaplain’s church.
Do you get paid by the sports you serve?
Our chaplains are volunteers, so they are not paid by the sports they serve.
- We want Sports Chaplaincy to be available to all, so we do not want money to be an issue.
- Most sports clubs also rely on gifts of time and money. Therefore we do not want to be a burden.
- Being neutral is one of our core values. Sports Chaplains work within sport, but also need to be independent. We do not want to risk actual or perceived conflicts of interest. For example, an athlete may not be as willing to open up to someone who is paid by the club.
Clubs may occasionally provide their chaplain with clothing. They may also reimburse them for costs like travel. If they wish to do more, we ask them to donate to Sports Chaplaincy NZ, rather than to an individual. However, SCNZ and its chaplains do not expect or ask for such gifts.
