Plan B Can Be Awesome - Hollie Davidson

Quote

God can take "Plan B" and make it better than "Plan A" ever would have been.

Joyce Meyers

Real Life

In 2012 Hollie Davidson was a 19 year old half-back playing her second season in the Scotland Women’s Under 20 rugby team. That year she was selected for her first cap with the Scottish senior side.

The Friday before she was due to fly out with the team for the test, during a training game with the wider Scottish side, she injured her shoulder. The injury was significant enough for her to be left at home for the test match. When the coach rang to tell her, Davidson says “it was like my dreams had fallen down around me”. Once her shoulder had recovered, Davidson spent the next two years trying to get back into the national team. Sadly, it never happened.

While Davidson was still playing, she started showing an interest in refereeing and soon discovered how much she enjoyed the role. Her coach encouraged her that she had the potential to really go places with it.

In 2017 Davidson signed with the Scottish Rugby Football Union as the first fully professional women’s rugby referee in Scotland. Davidson has gone on to referee World Rugby Women’s 7s, Pro14 men’s competition, Women’s Rugby World Cup final, and was the first female to referee a six nations men’s team. It’s fair to say her Plan B in rugby, has worked out pretty well.

When we are deeply invested in working towards a goal, failure to achieve that goal is devastating. It can feel like there is nothing else that will ever compare. While we cannot instantly dive into something else, it is important that in time we look at new possibilities and begin to build towards something else. As Joyce Meyer says, God can make plan B even greater than what we thought plan A was going to be.

When faced with disappointments, the wisest move is to bring them to God, surrender our hopes and dreams to Him and trust that He will guide us on a new path.

Bible Verse

You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done.

Genesis 50:20

Prayer

Lord when I am faced with disappointment, help me not to cling to it eternally, but turn it over to You, allowing You to show me a new way and new possibilities.
